Re: Let PERA choose its investments, March 5 editorial.
I thank The Denver Post for articulating the concerns about Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) investments and potential restrictions based upon political viewpoints. Those viewpoints, incidentally, have nothing to do with the economic issues faced by Coloradans. PERA addressed concerns about funding and stability, and a recent independent audit demonstrated the soundness of that approach. No private investor would seek returns while being hamstrung by arbitrary limitations — there are plenty of natural limitations to suffice. Giving PERA the flexibility to invest is in the interest of all the public servants who rely upon that system. It is also in the interest of the public for PERA to have the sound financial footing that taxpayers expect — and that PERA s noisy detractors have been seeking.
