The athletic Michaela Onyenwere has been named Colorado’s Gatorade girls basketball player of the year for a second straight season.
Now in its 31st year, the award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence in addition to high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court.
Onyenwere, a 6-foot junior forward, has led the Wolves to a 26-0 record and a berth in the Class 5A semifinals that begin Thursday.
She averaged 24.4 points and 10.3 rebounds per game while shooting at 62 percent from inside the arc entering the final four. Ranked as the nation s No. 28 recruit in the Class of 2017 by ESPN HoopGurlz, Onyenwere has maintained a B average in studies.
A devoted parishioner in her church community, she has volunteered locally on behalf of the Special Olympics and as a youth basketball coach.
Michaela Onyenwere is an exceptional athlete that possesses great energy, Grandview coach Josh Ulitzky said. She is a player that gives her best effort every time she is on the floor. She is a great teammate who does whatever is required to help her team win. Her leadership has been more evident as she has become more vocal and continues to lead by example in practice and in games.
