Re: Tax plan a threat to Colorado jobs, March 8 editorial.

Thinkstock

Your editorial argues that House Bill 1275, a bill designed to review offshore tax havens, would create a bureaucratic burden and discourage large multinational corporations from doing business in Colorado. The reality is that our current system is actually forcing small businesses to bear an extra tax burden because large corporations aren t playing by the same rules. HB 1275 would institute fairness and level the playing field for small businesses.

Too many large companies use complicated accounting maneuvers to shift their profits into offshore tax havens and minimize their payments. These companies essentially shift what they owe to consumers and small business owners, costing the average Colorado small business an extra $3,551 annually in taxes.

If policymakers want a strong Colorado for small businesses, then they need to focus on making sure our tax code is helping small businesses, not hurting them.
