Salary increases for a dozen of Mayor Michael Hancock’s appointees won quiet approval Monday night from the Denver City Council.
The council passed the proposal 13-0 as part of a block vote with no discussion.
Most of Hancock’s Cabinet appointees . That’s less than career-service employees have received in the two years .
The largest raises, based on surveys of pay for similar positions elsewhere, are for the administrator of the Department of Environmental Health, whose salary will increase 16 percent, to $149,040; and the Denver police chief, whose salary will increase 12 percent over last year, to $199,000.
The police chief isn’t considered a charter officer in the mayor’s Cabinet.
A week earlier, council members Debbie Ortega and Rafael Espinoza had voted “no” after Ortega called for a separate vote on the proposal’s introduction.
Regarding a raise for the health administrator, Ortega had criticized during an earlier meeting the city’s failure to implement recommendations from a health assessment in neighborhoods near Interstate 70, arguing it should be part of the administrator’s responsibilities. Espinoza didn’t explain his vote.
Neither called again for a separate vote Monday.
