COMMERCE CITY — No one wore the Rapids captain’s armband longer than Pablo Mastroeni.

Yet as coach, Mastroeni has never settled on a permanent captain for any significant period of time. For now, though, striker Kevin Doyle will wear the armband.

“Kevin’s our captain,” Mastroeni said Tuesday. Doyle has captained Colorado in the first two regular-season games. “Kevin’s done that all throughout the whole preseason.”

Mastroeni said he defines a captain not by the armband but by a player’s willingness to lead by example.

“I’ve really enjoyed it,” Doyle said Tuesday. “It’s an honor to captain whatever club, wherever you play. To have the armband is great for however long it lasts.”

Mastroeni stopped short of naming Doyle his permanent captain, adding that if he’s unavailable, there are plenty of players capable of filling in.
