Some pressing for bikes in wilderness focus on issues of trail erosion or impacts to visitors and wildlife, where they front overly rosy claims. In diminishing the purpose of wilderness, they hawk a dumbed-down version of the public estate. (AFP/Getty Images file)

Re: Arguing for bicycles in wilderness areas is futile, March 13 Writers on the Range column.

Humility and human restraint are two qualities much needed in today s world. How sad that mountain bikers wish to invade the last vestiges of our public lands where these qualities can be nurtured.

Make no mistake about it, if the bikers win their crusade, the other interests that Tim Lydon calls out will not only whittle away at the edges but will mount their own full-scale campaigns to invade wilderness areas.
