The Colorado Department of Transportation will temporarily close a portion of Interstate 25 Monday to install an overhead sign structure that will give drivers information about a .
Construction will block northbound I-25 traffic between Thornton Parkway and 104th Avenue from 1 to 3 a.m.
The signs, some of which will span the width of a football field, are part of a project CDOT began in October 2013, when crews broke ground for new high-occupancy vehicle express lanes in each direction of I-25. The lanes opened for testing in March.
“These new signs are an integral part of the statewide express lanes project and will help inform motorists as they begin to utilize the new express lane,” said CDOT engineer Jason Lucerna in a news release.
The additions are made of “full-cube” prismatic reflective sheeting, which makes them visible at night without external lighting.
The agency recommended that motorists allow for extra time for their commutes. CDOT officials suggested northbound travelers take the westbound exit at Thornton Parkway and a detour north on Pecos Street. Then, drivers can use 104th Parkway to re-enter northbound I-25.
Southbound lanes will remain open.
