The 500 block of South Harrison Lane in Denver is marred by extreme heaving and settling of the street. (Cyrus McCrimmon, The Denver Post)
Re: Make sidewalks a priority, too, March 27 editorial.
I live just a few blocks south of Denver in Englewood. Years ago we passed an ordinance adding a charge to each property s water bill for sidewalk and concrete maintenance. I remember voting for it enthusiastically because I figured each of us contributing a little would be better for the whole.
Every year the city surveys the sidewalks and gutters and prioritizes the work. The handicapped ramps at the corners are now nearing completion, and all sidewalks are maintained at a very high level.
This process gives us an objective review of the infrastructure and the means to pay for repairs and improvements.
Even though my property has needed no work, I continue to support the whole idea. As I age and walk the neighborhoods around my house, I can certainly see the importance of such a program, and I can tell the difference it has made.
