SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Right-hander Jordan Lyles will start the Rockies’ home opener on Friday against San Diego, the club announced Saturday.
Lyles, who made his final Catcus League start on Saturday against Seattle, has had a tough spring training. He’s posted a 7.88 ERA over 16 innings, with a .313 batting average against and a team-high four home runs surrendered.
The Rockies’ rotation lines up this way to begin the season:
• Left-hander Jorge De La Rosa will start Monday night’s season opener against Arizona at Chase Field. He’ll oppose Diamondbacks ace Zack Greinke.
• Right-hander Chad Bettis will start the second game of the series.
• Right-hander Tyler Chatwood will take the mound for Game 3.
Thursday is an off day for the Rockies before Friday’s home-opener at Coors Field. The off day, coupled with another off day on April 11, allows Colorado to open the season with a four-man rotation.
Jon Gray was going to be the fifth starter but he’s injured and is now working his way back from an abdominal strain. He will open the season the disabled list. Gray is scheduled to throw live batting practice on Monday, and if that goes well he could pitch in a minor-league rehab game on Friday.
In other news, the Rockies reassigned left-hander Yohan Flande to their minor-league camp. The Rockies have 35 players in camp, including three non-roster players.
A series of moves is expected after Saturday’s game. Infielder Daniel Descalso (fractured hand), left-hander Tyler Matzek (anxiety issues), right-hander Jason Motte (shoulder) and left-hander Tyler Anderson (strained oblique) are expected to join Gray on the disabled list to start the season.
