Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump points as he speaks at a campaign stop, March 30, in Appleton, Wis. (Nam Y. Huh, The Associated Press)

Re: Trump backpedals on abortion remark, March 31 news story.

The horrified reaction by Republicans and the pro-life movement to Donald Trump s statement about punishing women that get illegal abortions is telling. Trump, not being schooled in the proper rhetoric of conservative talking points about abortion, used logic normally associated with crime and punishment. In the twisted logic of the pro-life movement, the woman who has decided to abort has been taken advantage of and been mistreated by abortion doctors and pro-choice supporters and therefore cannot be blamed. The reality is that if the pro-life movement advocated arresting women for the crime of abortion, they would lose support immediately.

Republicans, the way to really support women is by campaigning to make contraceptive services and sex education easily available, thus reducing unwanted pregnancies and abortions.
