Re: The importance of calling out Islamic State genocide, March 27 Ved Nanda column.
Professor Ved Nanda s column offered Coloradans a reasoned assessment of the Obama administration s declaration that the Islamic State is engaged in acts of genocide in Syria, as indeed they are.
Sadly, Syria is not an isolated incident. The conflicts Nanda mentioned in Somalia, Sudan and Rwanda cost millions of lives. Today we might add the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, and Burma/Myanmar. History may be the judge, but we in Colorado do not have to wait for history s judgment.
April is Genocide Awareness and Prevention Month, and the Colorado Coalition for Genocide Awareness and Action (ccgaa.org) urges you to act.
U.S. Sens. Ben Cardin, D-Md., and Thom Tillis, R-N.C., are advancing the Genocide and Atrocities Prevention Act of 2016. Sens. Michael Bennet and Cory Gardner of Colorado should co-sponsor this bill. Let them hear from Coloradans like you that we are aware and want our leaders to take action.
