An inmate at the Mesa County Jail jumped to his death Thursday from a second-floor balcony, authorities announced.

The incident happened at about 4:20 p.m. Thursday and the inmate died at the scene after striking his head, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.

Jail deputies and medical staff administered immediate medical attention and the Grand Junction Fire Department was called to the scene but life saving measures were to no avail.

The inmate’s name was not released.

He was being held on an outstanding warrant on sexual assault charges.
