Twenty-three seniors ended up spending the night at a Red Cross shelter after a fire in Littleton Wednesday.
The at a senior living apartment complex in the 5800 block of S. Windermere Street. First responders spent the afternoon evacuating the 130-unit building. Water and electricity was shut off, and officials say the building sustained heavy smoke damage so none of the residents were allowed to go home Wednesday night.
Kelli Narde, a spokeswoman for the city of Littleton, said residents are not expected to be allowed back in Thursday either, but officials are awaiting results of air quality tests before making those determinations.
The Red Cross had 67 residents register with them as displaced. Several had their own transportation and stayed with family or friends.
Red Cross volunteers are providing meals to residents and nurses are staffing the shelter and helping evacuees retrieve medicines that firefighters were able to take from some apartment units.
Officials from the Humane Society of the South Platte Valley are housing and caring for evacuated pets.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
