DENVER (AP) — A new study shows fewer Americans are visiting libraries — which means they’re missing out on the changes at such institutions.

The results of a Pew Research Center survey were released Thursday as the Public Library Association held its annual conference in Denver.

Pew has been asking American adults whether they visited a library in the past year. In 2012, the first time the question was asked, 53 percent said yes. That dropped to 44 percent last year.

Pew also found that many don’t know their libraries offer programs like e-book borrowing and online high school equivalency study materials.

The Public Library Association national conference is a chance for librarians to learn about the latest programs and technologies. The association works to strengthen public libraries and their staffs.
