What’s up, doc?
It’s no secret that simple walking improves your health. Just 30 minutes a day can reduce your risk of diabetes, improve blood pressure, elevate your mood and more. Several times a month, physicians with National Jewish Health give a 10-minute talk about a specific health topic, then lead an easy one-mile walk, while answering any medical questions on your mind. The next talk and walk is on April 9 at 8 a.m. at Crestmoor Park in Denver — rain or shine. Meet near the tennis courts. Participants enjoy free refreshments, blood pressure checks and giveaways. Other walks are scheduled on April 16, 20 and 30. Topics and locations vary.
Weird science
Does your family have good chemistry? If your family is feeling “experimental,” Regis University is hosting Science Sunday on April 10 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at its Felix Pomponio Family Science Center (3333 Regis Blvd. in Denver, use Entrance 1). It’s free and open to the public. Explore more than two dozen interactive science demos and activities. View the sun through a telescope, make a lava lamp, explore how we see color, chat with scientists and more. The afternoon promises lots of valuable lessons in astronomy, chemistry, brain science, psychology and biology, as well as family fun. Kids even earn a goody bag for exploring all the hands-on activities. For more information, call 303-458-4974.
Baked bargain
Starbucks is making afternoons a little sweeter with its popular Sweet Receipt promo. Through April 11, make a purchase in the morning (anytime before 2 p.m.) and bring the receipt back in the same day after 2 p.m. to get a bakery item for $1. Budget-conscious customers can buy a petite vanilla scone for $1.25 or banana for $1 in the morning to keep costs at a minimum. If you’re buying more than one item in the morning, consider paying for each one separately. Then, you’ll have more Sweet Receipts to share with friends and family later in the day. The sweet deal is valid only at participating Starbucks stores, so check the bottom of your receipt for the offer first.
Story time
When you open a book, you open your mind to so much possibility and adventure. That’s why it’s important to spark the love of reading among little ones, so they become passionate bookworms as adults. One Book 4 Colorado does just that by giving preschoolers a book for free. From April 11 to 25, any four-year-old in the state can pick up his or her own copy (in English or Spanish) at all public libraries and Denver Preschool Program classrooms. Again this year, 75,000 copies will be given away. This year’s title will be announced on April 11.
Here’s the scoop
We all scream for ice cream, especially when it’s free. Ben & Jerry’s is hosting its Free Cone Day by giving away free scoops of ice cream, frozen yogurt and sorbet on April 12 from noon to 8 p.m. Plan accordingly, as the lines can very long for this cool giveaway. Once again, they expect to scoop more than a million free cones worldwide. Limit one cone per customer. The annual celebration also introduces new flavors, such as this year’s Cake My Day, Salted Caramel Brown-ie Ale, Coconuts for Caramel Core and more. There are four participating shops in Colorado: Boulder, 1203 Pearl St.; Denver, 2339 E. Evans Ave.; Fort Collins, 1 Old Town Square, Ste. 104; and Lone Tree (in Park Meadows Mall), 8515 Park Meadows Center Dr.
Every Saturday, Laura Daily and Bryan K. Chavez at Mile compile “Cheap Checklist” to help smart shoppers find freebies, discounts and deals. Send tips to info@milehigh 10 to 14 days in advance.
