Thornton and Lone Tree have had Krispy Kreme locations for years. Now downtown Denver will finally get its turn.
The North Carolina doughnut chain has posted a “We’re Hiring” sign on the window of a former Sprint cellular store along the 16th Street Mall. The location is sandwiched between a Starbucks and Duck Soup at Republic Plaza.
An employee at the company’s Thornton store confirmed that the new Denver location is expected to open May 1.
Krispy Kreme made a big splash when it opened its first retail outlet near Park Meadows Mall back in March 2001. Donut lovers camped out overnight to get an early taste and two fans even flew in from Germany.
But the chain ran into trouble after its rapid expansion diluted the appeal of its brand. It was also hurt by an accounting scandal and concerns about gluten-heavy diets also hurt the company.
The chain has started expanding again, primarily abroad, but also in the U.S. Last year, the company opened its 1,000th location, in Kansas City, Kan.
