The Red Cross is continuing to house displaced residents from a 130-unit senior apartment building that caught fire last week and is moving to a new location where services might be needed at least several more days.

The shelter, which is also the resource center for evacuees looking for information, will now be at the Life Center at 5804 S. Datura St.

at the Southview Place Tower in Littleton. Firefighters and first responders spent the afternoon evacuating residents from their balconies.

for 23 seniors but registered at least 67 people who were displaced.

According to an updated news release from the Red Cross, last night 14 displaced residents spent the night at the shelter. Also, “up to 100” evacuees are visiting the site daily for updates, meals, clothing and other services.

A week later the building remains uninhabitable, but Andy Boian, a spokesman for Southview Place Tower, said work is moving along.

Electricity has been restored to 80 percent of the building. Water and elevators are also now working, but crews are still trying to restore the fire alarm systems, Boian said.

“We’re doing an evaluation, but there is a chance we will have to tear down some of the apartments affected,” Boian said.

In the meantime, residents are being allowed to schedule time to enter their units to retrieve any belongings they may need.

The Red Cross is asking that all evacuees also set up an appointment to meet with a caseworker and with a nurse for help getting any medications. To make an appointment, evacuees can call 303-607-4796.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
