Two semi trucks collided early Wednesday in Weld County, killing one driver and spilling 1,500 gallons of diesel fuel on the road, according to the Fort Lupton Fire Department.

The accident at Weld County Road 8 and U.S. 85 happened at 4:37 a.m., said Phil Tiffany, Fort Lupton fire chief.

“One was about a 4,000-gallon fuel tanker, the other was carrying industrial equipment on a flat bed trailer,” Tiffany said.

A valve on the tanker truck was sheared off during the collision, spilling the diesel fuel.

U.S. 85 northbound is closed at County Road 6, Tiffany said.

“We know the truck is empty at this point in time. There is no danger, it just requires an environmental cleanup. We are waiting on the clean-up and waiting on a tow truck,” Tiffany said shortly before 8 a.m.
