Over the next two months, utility work will be done on in Commerce City as part of the city’s efforts to widen the highway.

This week, Xcel Energy and Sturgeon Electric began installing underground electrical lines and removing electrical lines overhead.

Work is taking place between 88th and 96th avenues, from 72nd Avenue and Quebec Street, Commerce City said on its website.

According to the city, Xcel does not have any power outages planned, but if the energy company needs to shut down power it plans to notify businesses and residents who would be affected.

Also, some shoulders along roads as well as private driveways might be impacted.

The project to widen the highway from 72nd to 112th Avenue is part of the city’s five-year capital-improvement program that will increase the highway from two lanes to four, with a “multi-use” side path separated from traffic for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Construction of the lanes is expected to begin in mid-2016, according to the city.
