Who wins: The 1995-96 Bulls or the 2015-16 Warriors?
When Golden State broke the Bulls’ 20-year-old regular-season record for wins on April 18, plenty of debate sparked as to which team would come out victorious on the court.
I chimed in with my two cents last week, but for today’s Know This, I took a totally scientific approach to the question.
I went to NBA 2K16 to decide the debate.
Using the game’s default settings (six-minute quarters and simulation style), I pit the two teams (with the latest updates) against each other to determine who’s the best.
Here are the results:
First quarter
The Warriors came out firing from the start. After Golden State won the opening tip, Stephen Curry dribbled the right side, pulled up from 25 and nonchalantly sank a shot from beyond the arc over Ron Harper. It would set the pace for the quarter as the Warriors shot 7 for 11 from the field.
End of first: Warriors 18, Bulls 12
Second quarter
The Warriors’ hot shooting cooled in the second and Chicago took full advantage. The Bulls outrebounded Golden State 10-4 in the quarter and Michael Jordan took over. His Airness scored eight points and Harper chipped in with two steals as Chicago went on a 17-7 run.
End of second: Bulls 29, Warriors 25
Third quarter
The teams opened the second half trading their first four buckets. Jordan and Curry each had five points as the Bulls and Warriors battled to an 11-all stalemate.
End of third: Bulls 40, Warriors 36
Fourth quarter
Live by the 3-pointer, die by the 3-pointer. The Warriors went all in with their final push. Unfortunately, they shot 0-for-6 from beyond the arc as Chicago pulled away 13-9 in the quarter for the victory.
Final: Bulls 53, Warriors 45
Jordan led all scorers, scoring putting up 21 points on 9-of-21 shooting. Pippen added 10 points and Toni Kukoc provided a spark off the bench with 10 more.
Curry was the one consistent force for usually potent Warriors offense. He finished with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field (3-for-6 from 3-point range) and four assists. The rest of Golden State was 0-for-10 from beyond the arc. Harrison Barnes added eight points, while Klay Thompson was held to just four. Draymond Green shot an atrocious 1-for-8 and finished with three points.
