A portion of the Arkansas River between mile markers 264 and 265 along Highway 50. (Helen H. Richardson, Denver Post file)

We continually read about new multimillion-dollar projects being created that will siphon more water from our already depleted river system to new, developing areas. Local planning boards and developers spend millions of dollars trying to create water we don t have to supply housing developments. I look around and see single-family houses being scraped in Denver and multi-family units replacing them. Huge apartment buildings spring up where once there was a church or small business.

Our elected officials need to wake up. We do not have any more water now then we did 40 years ago. We cannot continue to use smoke and mirrors to find more water for the sake of out-of-control development.

We used to worry about fighting a war over oil, but what we should really be concerned about is the civil war we are beginning to wage over water. Our governor, mayors and local councils need to wake up.

Louis DeRose, Lakewood
