Authorities are trying to piece together what led to a fatal hit-and-run on Colorado 131 in Eagle County early Thursday, according to the Colorado State Patrol

The fatal crash happened at 4:43 a.m., near mile post 5, said patrol spokesman Trooper Josh Lewis.

“An adult male was outside his vehicle, a Toyota pickup truck,” when he was hit by an unknown vehicle, Lewis said.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

So far, nothing is known about the vehicle that struck the man, Lewis said.

“We are trying to ascertain what happened,” he said.

The road was reopened at 9:13 a.m.
