Interview with Donna Stallman, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: I was tired of working in the corporate world. So I was just looking for a small business that I would love to enjoy running close to home. When I came across the little coffee shop the Sugar Cube, I saw the potential in it. I knew it needed some TLC. I put my heart into it. With the help of my dad, family and friends, I went through the process of getting it all up to code and ready. I reopened the Sugar Cube on Leap Day, Feb. 29, 2016. I am here at 4:30 a.m. and open by 5 a.m., ready to go. I am a Colorado native and believe in small business. That is why I went with all local small-business vendors. I want my coffee shop to be a one-of-a-kind with warmness and class. I have started a monthly featured flavor, which seems to be a hit. I also personalize my cups.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: I would say what sets me apart from other coffee shops is the care I take in making each customer’s special drink. I would also say that this a one-of-a-kind shop. The drive-up (or walk-up) makes it so easy for my customers, especially the young moms as they can get their special treat without having to get out of the vehicle. I will also make drinks for little children for a low price.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: I love being my own boss and enjoy serving people. I am a kind-hearted person who wants to spread positivity in the world. So the best thing I like is being able to do this my way with a special saying on my cups. I love putting my special touch in every drink I make with care from my heart.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: My biggest challenge is to get customers to drive in, as Wadsworth Boulevard is very busy. I want them to support this small business, not the corporations.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: As far as myself, this is a big change in my life for the better as I am a down-to-earth, spiritual woman with a wonderful family and man in my life who are the best support. I am very blessed. As far as my business, I have a large family, most of whom live here in Denver, so I have my own taste group when I want to experiment on new monthly flavors. They are very helpful with trial runs for getting it just right.
