Interview with José Granillo, owner

Q: How did you get involved in this business?

A: My dad worked restaurants for a very long time and he taught me the trade. We worked together for a long time and then one day we just decided that we should stop doing it for other people and go into business for ourselves. So we opened last year after we found this location.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

A: Our customer service and the amount of food that we serve people for the price. People tell me all the time that the deals here are amazing because they get a good amount of food that doesn’t break the bank. They like that — that’s why they keep coming back. We do daily specials like meatloaf one day and carnitas the next, and I think people really enjoy that.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?

A: Getting to know the customers and meeting and interacting with all kinds of different people. We have a ton of regulars and new guests all the time, and the place is constantly full around lunch in particular.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?

A: Definitely space. We are running out of space because we are constantly full. As soon as one table clears another person sits down and it goes on like that for hours. We would like to hopefully expand someday.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

A: This is definitely a family-run business. My cousin and my dad both work in the kitchen. Combined, we have more than 40 years of experience and that is what makes us unique, I think. We make all kinds of dishes like American breakfasts with eggs and pancakes and sausage and bacon, and then we have really popular dinners with things like chicken fried steak and really excellent Mexican dishes as well.
