A woman jailed in Colorado Springs was taken to a local hospital where she later died.

Erica Klag, 40, was arrested at about 10:50 p.m. Tuesday at a traffic stop in the area of Academy Park Loop and Academy Boulevard, according to a Colorado Springs Police Department media release.

Klag, a passenger in the vehicle, was taken into custody on a warrant for failure to appear on traffic charges.

While being taken to jail, Klag “indicated she was going to have a seizure,” police said.

Officers requested a medical response and Klag was cleared to be taken to jail, police said.

At the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center, while in a holding cell, Klag went into “cardiac arrest,” police said. She was taken to Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Klag died at the hospital on Thursday afternoon. The El Paso County Coroner’s Office is scheduled to perform an autopsy on Friday.

“Minimal force was used to restrain” Klag when she was arrested, police said.

Klag was handcuffed, a “spit sock” was placed over her head, and restraints were used to keep her from “thrashing about,” police said.

“While the investigation is on-going, there has been no indication of any excessive use of force on the part of any officers or deputies involved in this response,” the release said.

Police said Klag had hidden several small baggies of methamphetamine “on and in her body” the night of the arrest.

An investigation is ongoing.
