So, having caused the Animas River spill through what could plausibly be characterized as criminal negligence, the Environmental Protection Agency now wants to reward itself with a big fat Superfund site designation that would be administered by — who else — themselves!

If a corporation had been responsible for that spill with the same degree of culpability as the EPA, it would be facing fines, penalties and possibly reparations to towns, tribes and individuals that could very well bankrupt it. Criminal charges might be levied against individuals deemed particularly responsible. To my knowledge, no one at the EPA has been fired, demoted or even reprimanded.

Here’s a modest proposal: 1) the EPA fires those responsible for this spill; and 2) the EPA pays for the cleanup with money from its own budget.
