History Colorado to give Steve Turner top job

, the agency that overseas the state’s archives, museums and preservation efforts, will name Steve Turner as its .

Turner, who is an architect, has been serving as interim director since August. He has been with the agency since 2008, heading up the State Historical Fund and the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation. In that job, he administered more than $91 million of preservation grants and helped expand the state’s preservation tax credit, according to History Colorado.

Turner takes over for a department that cares for 15 million historic objects and operates nine attractions. History Colorado has a new board of directors and a new state historian in, who started there in January.

The agency is also rethinking what its museums put on display for the public, focusing less on national traveling exhibits and more on shows based on Colorado history featuring objects drawn from its own collection.

The History Colorado board expects to make Turner’s appointment official June 15.
