One of nearly 50 members of a Chicago gang indicted five weeks ago in Georgia was captured Friday in Denver, the FBI announced.

Alvis O’Neal, 38, was taken into custody without incident, the agency said, after he was tracked down by special agents assigned to the Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force. O’Neal was one of 48 members of the Gangster Disciples who were indicted in April by a federal grand jury in Atlanta.

Authorities did not say where the arrest took place.

The indictment was unsealed May 4, and 45 of the gang members were already in custody. O’Neal was not among them. Another of the remaining three was taken into custody not long after the indictment was made public. A third gang member, from Georgia, remains at large.

The gang members were indicted on racketeering charges that included murder, extortion, drug trafficking and credit card fraud.

Federal prosecutors have said gang members legitimized themselves by creating philanthropic endeavors where they lived, such as food drives to feed the homeless and, they said, rallies designed to “stop the violence.”

The gang, first organized in the 1960s, is described as highly organized with a superstructure that even included a board of directors and national meetings that required annual dues.

The indictments came after a three-year investigation.
