American cyclist Tejay van Garderen says he no longer plans to compete in the Summer Olympics in Brazil because of concerns about the Zika virus. Van Garderen’s wife is pregnant and he is concerned about her health and that of the baby she is carrying.
Other athletes, including U.S. soccer star Hope Solo, have expressed concerns about competing in Brazil.
A group of 150 health experts recently called for the Olympics to be moved or postponed because of Zika, which causes flu-like symptoms in adults but has been linked to severe birth defects, but the World Health Organization said there is “no public health justification” for such a move.
