Rockies RHP Jon Gray (3-2, 5.76 ERA) at Padres TBA, 7:10 p.m. Sunday, Root Sports, 850 AM
Gray has won three of his last four starts after posting his first career victory on May 13 vs. the Mets. He’s breaking out his changeup with more frequency, as well as flashing an effective curveball. Most important, Gray is becoming a more confident pitcher. “I think the biggest change is just the belief,” manager Walt Weiss said. “He knows he’s good and he belongs here, and that goes along way.” Gray wasn’t exceptionally sharp in his last start — six innings, three runs, five hits, three walks and four strikeouts in a victory against the Reds — but he did enough to secure a win at Coors Field. Veteran right-hander James Shields was scheduled to start for San Diego, but he was traded to the Chicago White Sox Saturday. The Padres are likely to dip into their bullpen for Sunday’s starter.
