An unconscious 6-year-old boy was pulled from a swim beach Sunday at a Lakewood park, police say.
Steve Davis, a Lakewood police spokesman, said the child was rescued from Soda Lakes in Bear Creek Lake Regional Park — off C-470 and U.S. 285 — about 4:45 p.m. and rushed to St. Anthony Hospital before being airlifted to Children’s Hospital Colorado.
“Everything points (to this) being accidental,” Davis said Monday morning. “I’m told this morning that he does have some brain function but his prognosis is unknown.”
Davis said reports are that the boy had been swimming before he was found unconscious in the lake. Davis said he didn’t know where the boy’s family was when he was found.
“I know the boy’s father was with him at the lake,” said Ronda Scholting, spokeswoman for West Metro Fire Rescue, which responded to the scene. “It was pretty crowded.”
The first firefighters to arrive at Soda Lakes found a park ranger doing CPR on the child, she said.
Scholting said the initial call for help was for a young boy’s drowning.
Police and fire officials initially said the boy was between 7 and 10 years old before confirming his date of birth Monday.
