A 21-year-old woman has been arrested for investigation of first-degree murder and child abuse causing death in the violent death of her 3-month-old baby.
Bethany Joy Smith was booked into the Jefferson County jail on Friday, according to a news release from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
A 911 call was made at 11:30 a.m. on May 20 in which a woman said her child had stopped breathing, the release said. Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies found the baby in a home on Lookout Mountain Circle in Golden with its mother.
Emergency workers attempted CPR on the unresponsive baby. The baby was taken to a hospital, where it was later pronounced dead.
An autopsy determined that the baby died as a result of abuse, the release said. Deputies interviewed both parents before arresting Smith.
