Cañon City police used a stun gun to subdue an angry man, who was in a home with a woman and three children, after neighbors reported shots fired and the man refused to leave the house.

The incident began when neighbors reported hearing “a male verbally expressing anger” and dogs barking, followed by shots at about 5 a.m. Tuesday, according to a release.

Officers saw a man and woman, along with three small children, in the home, but neither adult would leave the house, the release said.

The man “was pacing back and forth throughout the house. Officers observed a handgun and shotgun in a back bedroom in plain view,” the release said.

A Cañon City Crisis Negotiation Unit Team Officer contacted the woman by phone, and she left the residence at 6:27 a.m. The man refused to leave.

The officers used a stun gun to subdue the man, forced entry and took him into custody at 6:53 a.m.

The Colorado Department of Human Services was also on scene, and the children were medically evaluated.
