A driver died and another person was taken to a local hospital with injuries Tuesday in a multi-vehicle crash on I-70 in Golden.
The fatal collision involved a semi-truck and three vehicles, according to a Golden Police Department media release.
The traffic incident happened at about 4:15 p.m. in the westbound lanes of I-70 west of U.S. Highway 6, police said.
The driver of one vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Another person in the crash was taken to a local hospital. Further details on that person’s injuries were not released.
There were several witnesses to the multi-vehicle collision, police said.
The driver of the semi-truck, a 41-year-old California man with a valid commercial license, was taken to the Golden Police Department where he voluntarily consented to a blood test. He was released pending the outcome of the investigation.
The westbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours by the incident.
Traffic was detoured west through Morrison and west on U.S. Highway 6 through Clear Creek County. Drivers were asked to avoid the area if possible as officers with Golden and the Colorado State Patrol investigated the collision and highways crews worked on clearing the wreckage.
The highway was shut down at Colfax Avenue from about 4:15 p.m. to about 8:25 p.m. when one lane reopened, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. All westbound lanes reopened at about 9:40 p.m., according to a CDOT Twitter post.
The truck driver and the victim who died were not identified.
