Krispy Kreme Doughnuts announced Tuesday that its downtown location will open at 5 a.m. June 15 and will be creating a fan-picked signature doughnut for the 16th Street Mall store.
Doughnut fans can to decide the downtown location’s featured sweet, picking from the Alpine, the LODO, the Rockie or the Mile High.
Start lining up now — yeah, yeah, we know, there’s an anti-camping ordinance in Denver — as the North Carolina-based company will be giving the first customer in line a free dozen of Original Glazed doughnuts every week for a year. The next 99 customers in line will get a free dozen once a month for a year.
Located on the 16th Street Mall, the doughnut shop will be tucked between Starbucks and Duck Soup in the Republic Plaza. It’ll join the chain’s two existing locations in Thornton and at Park Meadows mall in Lone Tree. The March 2001 opening of the Park Meadows store, Colorado’s first, led to much fanfare as doughnut lovers camped overnight and two flew in from Germany.
The 16th Street Mall store will create 30 jobs, a company spokeswoman said. The company opened its 1,000 location last year and has stores in 27 countries.
