Former Broncos quarterback Brock Osweiler has passed on celebrating a Super Bowl 50 victory with his teammates for the second time this month.
Osweiler will not attend the Broncos’ private ceremony unveiling their Super Bowl 50 championship rings Sunday at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, Texans spokeswoman Amy Palcic confirmed. Osweiler, 25, signed with the Texans as a free agent in March.
The Texans have completed their organized team activities and will conduct a mandatory minicamp June 14-16.
The Associated Press first reported Osweiler’s decision to skip the Broncos’ ring ceremony.
Osweiler cited OTAs as the reason he skipped the Broncos’ trip to the White House, where President Barack Obama congratulated them Monday for being NFL champions.
Quieting distractions
From Peyton Manning’s retirement to Aqib Talib being shot to Von Miller’s contract, the Broncos’ offseason has been full of nonfootball-related intrigue. Thursday, the Denver coaches reiterated that the distractions won’t have a negative impact on the team’s mind-set going into the 2016 season.
“You’re going to deal with distractions. That’s part of it,” said second-year Denver head coach Gary Kubiak, who remains optimistic that a deal with Miller will be done soon. “The key is that you deal with them openly and honestly with your players, but you keep working.”
Last year, the Broncos dealt with the suspensions of Derek Wolfe and T.J. Ward and the quarterback controversy involving Osweiler and Manning. It didn’t stop them from winning the Super Bowl.
And this offseason, they’re also not concerned.
“I know nothing and I’ve been ordered to say nothing,” defensive coordinator Wade Phillips joked about the expected questions about Miller and Talib.
Impressive youngsters
Chris Harris has made a living as a lock-down cornerback, but he only has the second-most pass breakups during offseason workouts. The leader is second-year cornerback Lorenzo Doss, who Harris said is doing great in OTAs.
Kubiak said outside linebacker Kyle Kragen and receiver-returner Khalif Raymond are two undrafted rookies who have done well in workouts.
