Colorado House Speaker Dickey Lee Hullinghorst is taking the unusual step of asking a fellow Democrat to drop out of a race for a House district seat in Aurora.
The that Aurora school board member Eric Nelson, who is running for the House District 42 seat, was denied a bail bondsman license by the state Department of Regulatory Agencies in 2010 because of his criminal history.
Just months before he applied for a license, however, records show Nelson pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors, battery and disorderly conduct in Aurora. He also pleaded guilty to a domestic violence charge in 2002, among other brushes with the criminal and civil courts.
DORA said Nelson failed “to demonstrate that you are competent, trustworthy and of good moral character, and of good business reputation.”
As a result, the Aurora Public Schools board is investigating whether Nelson , in addition to his criminal background, according to the Chalkbeat Colorado website.
Nelson did not immediately return a call Wednesday.
He , “I believe fair game would be if I have gotten involved or committed any crimes recently, that the public would be concerned about. I think that’d be fair game.”
In the he faces Dominique Jackson. The winner faces Republican Michael Donald in the general election.
Jackson is endorsed by Hullinghorst, and House Democratic leader Crisanta Duran.
