A father and his adult son in Jefferson County accidentally let a young deer into their home Tuesday night and had to call deputies to save the animal.
Deputy Skyler Steele said he responded to the call after 10 p.m.
The residents had noticed that a fawn was in their backyard, possibly injured after sneaking into the property through a hole in wire horse fencing. When the father and son went outside to try to get the deer out of the yard, they left their house door open.
“They ended up scaring the animal into the house,” Steele said.
Once inside the house, the fawn ran around and ended hopping into a bathtub, getting trapped.
“I sat on the floor and calmed it down,” said Jim Willenbring, who lives with his dad in the home between Evergreen and Kittredge.
He said animals are in their yard all the time, but it is the first time one went inside their home.
When Steele and another deputy arrived, they noticed the fawn had a small scratch on her head from going through the fence, but otherwise uninjured and “just a little lost without her mother,” sheriff’s office.
Steele said he carried the fawn out of the house, and the deer was able to run off on her own.
Steele, who has been with the department for about three years, said most animal calls are about severely injured animals who may have to be put down.
“This was a pleasant surprise to find the deer was quite all right,” Steele said.
Willenbring said it was also a good night for them, leaving a good story to tell.
“It was a positive story! Much better than what’s been going on,” Willenbring said. “Something awesome that only nature can deliver.”
