A grass fire Wednesday afternoon forced the closure of a portion of Interstate 70 west of Rifle in Garfield County.

Smoke was visible and drivers experienced delays and detours, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The stretch of the westbound lanes closed as a safety precaution, according to a 3:55 p.m. CDOT Twitter post.

Firefighters, the Colorado State Patrol and CDOT crews worked the scene for about two hours.

The lanes reopened at about 5:40 p.m., according to the highway department.
