WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz endorsed Darryl Glenn for U.S. Senate on Friday, giving the cash-strapped commissioner from El Paso County a major boost as Colorado’s Republican primary heads into the homestretch.

On his , the Texas lawmaker and one-time presidential candidate touted Glenn’s conservative credentials and called on Colorado Republicans to back his candidacy — not a small thing given that Cruz and earned a from U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo.

“Darryl knows the value of freedom, and will take the fight to Washington for policies that bring back economic growth and preserve our individual liberties,” wrote Cruz, who added that he planned to hit the campaign trail with Glenn.

Glenn’s campaign confirmed he would host Cruz in Colorado Springs on Monday.

“I’m standing with Darryl Glenn and plan to campaign alongside him in the Centennial State,” he continued. “I’m asking Coloradans to join me in supporting Darryl because when conservatives stand united, we win.”

Party insiders and pundits considered Glenn an underdog candidate when he entered the race last year, but a  at the Republican state convention coupled with the backing of the influential has made him a contender ahead of the June 28 primary, despite having just $11,000 in his campaign war chest as of March 31.

The winner of the five-way race will face incumbent Democrat Michael Bennet.
