Sheridan has posted photos to his Twitter feed showing the blaze engulfing the trestle. A sheriff’s deputy said the fire was put out quickly but that the trestle remained ablaze for much longer.
The all-volunteer Kiowa County Fire Department and nearby La Junta Fire Department responded.
Authorities have not estimated the blaze’s size or said what ignited it.
Crews were cleaning up the scene about 3 p.m.
Hwy 96 west of Haswell is back open. Fire responders are still on mop up stages.
