A Denver man was indicted Tuesday on two counts of carjacking and one count of using a firearm to further a carjacking, both carjackings occurred on the same day, according to a Department of Justice news release.
Jeremy Lee Cabral, 22, was previously charged on Feb. 26 with one count of carjacking and one count of using a firearm, however, according to documents filed with the court, Cabral was the on Feb. 3 in Westminster.
During one of those carjackings, Cabral allegedly showed the victim a gun and asked for the keys to her car. When the victim refused, explaining that a dog was in the car, the defendant repeated his demand, and after the victim ran away, Cabral discharged his firearm, the release said.
A co-defendant was separately charged on June 13 by the U.S. Attorney with aiding and abetting the carjacking.
If convicted of using a firearm in the carjacking, Cabral faces a mandatory minimum penalty of 10 years in prison and a maximum of life, with a fine of up to $250,000. Each carjacking conviction carries a possible penalty of up to 15 years’ imprisonment and a fine of $250,000, according to the release.
The case is being investigated by the FBI, the Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force and the City of Westminster Police Department.
