Colorado Springs police shot and killed a man Wednesday morning while responding to reports he was armed with a gun, officials say.

Natalie Sosa, spokeswoman for the El Paso County sheriff, said the shooting happened about 7:30 a.m. near the intersection of Delta and San Marcos drives.

Sosa said the man was reported to have a silver gun in one hand and an alcoholic beverage in the other. When officers arrived, the man pointed the weapon at an officer, authorities say.

The sheriff’s office says the officer told the man to drop his weapon, and the man did not follow the command. The officer fired, fatally wounding the man.

He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Photos from the scene showed a large area cordoned off in crime-scene tape.

Sosa said investigators believe the man was about 25 years old. His name has not been released.

“We’re still investigating,” she said.
