Dozens of Democrats, led by Rep. John Lewis of Georgia, staged a sit-in on the House floor on Wednesday, in an attempt to force votes on gun-control measures.
The Democrats are pushing legislation that would expand background checks for gun purchasers and prevent suspected terrorists from buying firearms.
Following this month’s mass shooting in Orlando, the Senate voted down four gun-control measures on Monday, including bills on the same issues being discussed during Wednesday’s sit-in.
In response to the protest, Republicans called a recess in the House Wednesday. A spokeswoman for Speaker Paul Ryan said business could not proceed as long as the sit-in continued.
