An adult male raccoon slept off anesthesia Tuesday morning after it was detached from an illegal leg trap that crushed its paw.
Longmont animal control had transported the mask-faced mammal earlier in the day from the Centennial Park area to the Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Center for assessment and heavy antibiotics, rehabilitator Lea Peshock said.
“Because of the way the trap squeezed it, we’re even worried that the hand … lacked blood supply for enough period of time that it’s just going to die,” Peshock said. “And then he will have to be put down because we can’t amputate it.”
She said the center is not permitted to alter animals that could one day be released back into the wild. The raccoon — identified as an adult by its chipped and blackened teeth — would not survive with one front paw.
