Massachusetts Institute of Technology researcher Carl Vondrick sits next to a computer monitor at his desk on the school's campus, in Cambridge, Mass. MIT says a computer that binge-watched TV shows such as “The Office,” “Big Bang Theory” and “Desperate Housewives” learned how to predict whether the actors were about to hug, kiss, shake hands or slap high-fives, a breakthrough that eventually could help the next generation of artificial intelligence function less clumsily.Re: “,” June 27 Tech Know story.
I was dismayed to read an article about how researchers are using television sitcoms to create algorithms to refine artificial intelligence in robots. The plan is to use TV shows like “The Office” and “Desperate Housewives” as the basis for robot-to-human interaction. Doesn’t that imply we are building in sexism, ageism and humor aimed at teenagers as the basis for robot communication and interaction? I’d like to think we can do better.
