Another election year and another bevy of campaigners and their supporters railing against “the establishment,” whatever that is. That is why Bernie, Brexit and Blowhard — oops, Trump — have support. Supporters say, “If we just throw all the incumbents out, then our system will be more responsive to We the People.” That is totally naive because the corruption is systemic. The “establishment” is the plethora of well-entrenched lobbyists who buy our politicians, write the laws and have far more institutional knowledge than our elected officials due to term limits and reduced congressional staffing. If the “establishment” is the problem, then get the money out of politics, re-establish funding for congressional staffers, and stop the revolving door that turns congressmen into lobbyists. Otherwise, all we have is a congressional brothel.
