
A respected doctor died Monday after hitting his head on a rock while hiking with his wife in Glenwood Canyon.
Dr. William “Bill” Bevins Jr. was on the Grizzly Creek Trail at about 2:30 p.m. when he tripped and was hurt. An passing hiker helped try to resuscitate him until first responders could arrive.
“Ultimately, efforts were unsuccessful,” the Garfield County Coroner’s Office said in a news release.
Authorities say the death was an accident.
The coroner’s office said Bevins was a well-known and respected emergency room physician who worked at Grand River Health in Rifle and in the past at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs.
His family released a statement saying he touched lives on several continents during his work, which included stints in Kenya and Central Asia. He also taught in more than a dozen countries. His hospital biography said he has two sons.
Family noted his “passion for equipping a new generation of caregivers in emergency medical care, and most of all, his lovingkindness.”
