An inmate serving a 220-day work-release sentence for drunken driving killed himself Wednesday in Larimer County, the Denver Sheriff Department reported.

The 57-year-old male inmate, whose name has not been released pending family notification, left the jail Wednesday morning to report to his job as a machine operator, said Simon Crittle, a sheriff’s spokesman. But the inmate never arrived.

His body was found after 5 p.m. Wednesday in Larimer County, but he most likely had died in the early afternoon. The cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest, Crittle said.

Inmates serving work-release sentences are allowed to leave the County Jail on Smith Road during the day to go to their regular jobs. They must report back to work in the evenings.
