Interstate 270 will undergo a full closure Friday night between the Vasquez Boulevard and Interstate 76 exits for the construction of the North Metro Rail Line Skyway Bridge deck.

Eastbound lanes will close at 10 p.m. and reopen by 4 a.m. Saturday. Westbound lanes will close at 11 p.m. and reopen by 6 a.m.

Eastbound traffic will reroute from Interstate 76 to State Highway 224 (74th Avenue) to Vasquez Boulevard back to rejoin I-270. Westbound traffic will redirect from Vasquez Boulevard to Colorado 224 to I-76 back to rejoin Interstate 270.

Alternate routes will be posted on Interstate 25, I-70, I-76 and U.S. Highway 36.

Detour signs will direct traffic around the closure. Ramps from York Street to eastbound I-270, from Vasquez Boulevard to I-270 and from Interstate 76 to I-270, will also be affected by this work.

Crews from the Regional Transportation District are building the commuter rail line — N-Line for short — as part of the FasTracks program. Differing from RTD’s light rail lines, commuter line trains are faster, heavier and larger and can run on freight train rails. The N-Line will be RTD’s second commuter rail line in addition to the already-open University of Colorado A-Line.

“We’ve been building this bridge for many, many, many months,” said Kathy Berumen, Regional Rail Partners public information manager. An identical closure took place May 6, and several small closures to built other parts of the line have ensued in Thornton, Northglenn and Commerce City so far.

The Skyway Bridge is one of 13 bridges on the 18.5-mile North Metro Rail Line project and will eventually span two miles. The N-Line will run from Union Station through Commerce City, Northglenn and Thornton.

All construction activities are weather-dependent and subject to change. For up-to-date information on construction activities, access the North Metro Rail Line .
